The BJP came down heavily on the Haryana Urban Development Authority (HUDA) for razing down the houses which the urban development authority had said have come up on government land.

The BJP lashed out at the HUDA saying that it was clamping down on the poor people who should have rather been rehabilitated under the government’s welfare schemes for the poor. Earlier this week HUDA had removed illegal structures at Azad Colony, but the drive was shelved following protests by the affected people and the BJP.

In a statement issued here, the BJP condemned the demolition drive started at Azad colony. The city unit of the party criticised the action of HUDA and police department in tearing down the houses. HUDA was assisted in the drive by the police.

The BJP said that the ruling Congress has shown that it has no concern for the poor people. “The demolition has made hundreds of poor people homeless. The officials of the govt did not even spare women and children,” it said.

Panchkula District unit chief of the party Vishal Seth has asked the government to be compassionate in its behaviour towards the poor. “In the case people who have abided by the rules of the Supreme court should be given the flats immediately.” Seth also called for the setting up an of inquiry into the matter and also demanded action against “guilty officials.”

Among other BJP leaders who expressed their criticism were senior leaders V K Sood,Gian Chand Gupta and general secretary,Bharat Bhushan Rheod.
