Hundreds of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) activists in Haryana staged demonstrations in various part of the state,to protest spiralling prices of commodities,particularly the hike in petrol prices on Friday. Many prominent BJP leaders courted arrest. Among those arrested,include Kirshan Pal Gujjar,arrested in Faridabad; Capt Abhimanyu,arrested in Rohtak; Ghanshyam Saraf in Bhiwani,Kavita Jain and Rajiv Jain,arrested in Sonepat; KS Sangwan,arrested in Jind; ID Swamy arrested in Panipat,Kanwarpal,arrested in Kurukshetra,Rosy Malik Anand,arrested in Panchkula; and Shashipal Mehta,held in Karnal district.

The protest is part of the nation-wide stir,organised by the BJP,against food inflation and “maladministration” of the UPA government.

According to the party’s spokesperson in Haryana,Gulshan Bhatia,“There were around 12,000 party workers,who courted arrest in various parts of Haryana. The maximum number of such activists were in the National-Capital Region”.

According to the Haryana police,the protest did not affect the daily life of people in the state. “Though there were instances of mild disruptions in Karnal,Hisar,Sonepat,Kurukshetra,Faridabad and Ambala; but no major instance of any disruption was reported from any part of the state,” said a senior Haryana police officer.
