Battling a calf sprain,Chandigarh youngster Feroze Grewal returned a card of level par-71 to lie second with a score of 145 in category A after the second round of the Indian Golf Union Uttar Pradesh Juniors Golf Tournament being played at Noida Golf Course on Wednesday. The 13-year-old Chandigarh golfer was four shots behind the overall leader Kolkata’s Viraj Madappa, who shot a brilliant round of 5-under-66 to grab the lead in the tournament.
“I was bit slow in the initial stages today and took my time to adjust. I suffered a calf sprain at the 13th hole yesterday and missed some easy chances to score a birdie on the 15th and 18th holes. But then I consulted with my physio and I wanted to continue playing in the tournament as these points are vital for me. I am getting cold treatment in between the play and I am eager to finish the tournament on a high,” shared the youngster, who was leading third placed Yuraj Sandhu by four strokes. The golfer had a slow start as he made a bogey at the fourth hole. But he came into his element as he carded a birdie on the seventh hole before making a bogey on the ninth hole. Grewal returned another bogey at the 11th hole before returning with consecutive birdies on 14th,15th and 16th holes respectively. The youngster then missed a birdie on the last hole of the day as his putt landed short. “My target was to play according to my strength and I managed that today. It was a satisfactory round and I plan to attack in the last two rounds. I did not want to lose points and that’s why I played a controlled round of golf today,” shared Grewal. Yuvraj Sandhu and Jairaj Singh Sandhu shared the third place at 149 while Kartikey Vashist and Pukhraj Singh Gill were tied for fifth at 152. In the Category B,it was Tanvir Kahlon who took a two-shot lead with a 36-hole total of 153 after he shot a round of 3-over par 74. Udayjit Bhalotia was second at 155 while another Chandigarh golfer Karandeep Kochhar was third at 156. Hassan Rahman was fourth at 157 while Jaiveer Singh was fifth at 158. Viraj opened his account with a birdie on the opening hole and played some steady golf until he hit a road block where he lost a shot each on the sixth and seventh hole. However he quickly made amends with back to back birdie on the eighth and ninth holes to take the turn at 1-under. Viraj was on fire on the back nine as he not only he saved pars but went on to make two pairs of birdies each on the 12th and 13th and on 16th and 17th to submit a card of 5-under-67. “After the first round,I realized my mistakes and worked on them as this course is a thinking course. Everything went according to the script today except on couple of holes. My hitting and putting both were excellent,” said the leader. “I intend to build on the lead and see if I can win the tournament,” he added.
