In a daylight robbery on Thursday,three to four people looted Rs 16 lakh from two petrol pump employees while they were trying to deposit cash at a SBI bank at Amravati Enclave in Surajpur. A shot was also fired after the bag was snatched.
Police and eyewitnesses said ,around 10.15 am three-four youth came to the parking lot of the SBI branch. One of them whipped out a pistol and snatched the bag full of cash from the duo.
Kamaljeet Singh,an employee of the petrol pump run by Chandigarh resident Chitranjan Agarwal,said the two were carrying Rs 16 lakh in a bag and another Rs 4.5 lakh in the luggage box of the motorcycle they were riding,when they were confronted by the gang. Police said Singh and Harish Kumar,supervisor of the petrol pump,followed the robbers up to Old Panchkula,but they managed to get away.
The petrol pump is located a few blocks away from the SBI branch on the main Pinjore-Panchkula Road. Police suspect the employees were being watched as the robbery appeared planned. Meanwhile,Chitranjan Agarwal,who lives in Sector 9,said he received a call around 10.40 am about his employees being robbed. Agarwal,who has two other petrol pumps in Punjab,said he doesnt suspect anyone.
Surinder Kumar,driver at the SBI bank,said he was talking over the phone when the incident took place. Later,he ran to alert the bank officials but the robbers managed to flee. Police said one of the robbers has been caught in the CCTV footage,while adding that investigation is on.
Assistant Commissioner of Police,Panchkula,Krishan Hooda,said initial investigation revealed that four people carried out the robbery. He said police have launched a hunt. He added that the police was getting details of vehicles that passed through the toll post in the area as part of the investigation.
