August accounts for 50% rain this monsoon

The rainfall in August this year has accounted for around 50 per cent of the rainfall that was received throughout the rainy season. A total of 550.7 mm rainfall has been received in this monsoon from the beginning of the season till Tuesday. Of this,273 mm rainfall has been received in August alone.

The monsoon was delayed by almost a week this year. There was a deficiency of around 30 per cent in the rainfall in the city. It has been reduced with the rainfall in August. The past few days have witnessed rainfall almost daily. The Met Department has predicted that the spell of rainfall would continue in the coming days as well.

Last year in the month of August,190.3 mm rainfall was received. It was heavier in 2010 when 455.1 mm rainfall was received. The rainfall in 2009 was 216.6 mm,in 2008 it was 310.7 mm and in 2007 it was 214.3 mm. The highest-ever rainfall in the month of August was 583.3 mm in 1961.

The heavy rain has provided the city residents a respite from the heat with the day temperature being below normal. The rainfall has been scattered throughout the city with some sectors receiving more rainfall at a particular time than the others.
