In a bizarre incident on Monday, ashes of a 64-year-old were reported to be missing from a cremation ground in Sector 25. Dheeraj Arora, son of the deceased Sohan Lal Arora, alleged that the ashes of his father went missing when the family visited the cremation ground to pick up the ashes to immerse them in a river.

Sohan Lal passed away on August 22. The next day,his family performed the last rites. The ashes were stored in locker no 16 at the cremation ground as some rituals were pending. A few days later, the family visited the cremation ground to pick up the ashes. However,to their surprise the family found the pot in which the ashes were kept to be different. “We did not want the issue to escalate,so we shifted the pot in locker no. 19,” Dheeraj said.

On August 26,the family again went to the cremation ground. This time the pot was found missing along with the lock. “We are unable to reason why anyone would be interested in stealing ashes,” he said. The investigating officer said,“There could be two possibilities in this mysterious case. Either the pots got interchanged by mistake or someone stole it in order to steal money, that is at times, kept in the pots along with the ashes.”

Dheeraj, however said that there was no money in the pot. Ajmer,a priest at the cremation ground said,“There have been similar incidents in the past. In one case, the door of the locker was found to be missing along with the ashes. We have approached the administration a number of times to build a boundary wall behind the lockers to prevent such thefts in future. However,no one has paid heed till now.”
