Akali leaders thrashed a Congress leader in a function of Local Bodies department in Jalandhar on Sunday. The function was organised to distribute cheques worth Rs 410 crore to five Municipal Corporations and 45 municipal committees. The victim,Mohammad Sardar Dara,is the president of Malerkotla Municipal Committee and he has lodged a police complaint in Jalandhar.

The mayors and presidents of almost all the MCs and Municipal Committees were present to receive the cheques from Local Bodies Minister Bhagat Chuni Lal.

When the turn of Malerkotla Municipal Committee came, the cheque worth Rs 12.60 crore was handed over to SAD MLA from Malerkotla,Farzana Alam, instead of handing it over to the municipal committee president,Mohammad Sardar Dara, who belongs to Congress party and was invited to collect the cheque.

Dara objected and questioned why he was called if the cheque was to be handed over to the MLA. He also questioned why cheques of other committees were handed over to their respective presidents but not him.

Dara was then accosted by a few Akali leaders, who pushed Dara off the stage and dragged him outside the Red Cross Bhawan.
