Doors to the hotel, formerly known as James Plaza, that has been under construction for more than a decade, finally opened to the public yesterday. The hotel, now managed by Sarovar group and rechristened Park Plaza, packs in 138 elegantly designed rooms and suites. Housed in the heart of Sector 17,it’s an enviable address that’s missed activity for long as the hotel had been under construction for a decade and dogged with controversies. But all that seems to be well into the past as Park Plaza welcomed guests after actor Sunny Deol inaugurated it officially. With an investment of Rs 125 crore, the Park Plaza looks like any of its contemporaries. “For a well-planned and beautiful city like Chandigarh, the lack of hotel rooms is quite embarrassing. We hope to fill that gap,” remarked Ajay K Bakaya, executive director,Sarovar Hotels and Resorts. Looking to target an increasing number of corporates who do business in the city, the hotel is well-equipped with conferencing facilities and other amenities like a spa, pool and gym among others. “We are opening in phases, with 85 rooms currently operational,” informed Bakaya. It’s also a tad disappointing that none of the stand-alone restaurants housed in the hotel — be it the Chinese fine-diner The Oriental Blossom,Indian restaurant IndiSpice or the popular pub Geoffrey’s,have opened yet as the management is taking it step by step. But for those who wish to “check out” Park Plaza, then the all-day dining area called Cinnamon is currently operational. The introductory stay offer at the hotel starts at Rs 4,990 (excluding taxes).
