It is well-known that the late dancer-cum-choreographer Uday Shankars directorial debut Kalpana has been selected for screening under the Cannes Classics 2012 category. But what has come as a pleasant surprise is that his 94-year-old widow,Amala Shankar, who was the lead actor of the film, will walk the red carpet on May 17 at the 65th edition of the festival. She will be accompanied by daughter Mamata and daughter-in-law Tanushree. Kalpana will be screened as part of the World Cinema Foundation. Kalpana is one of the many classics that has been restored by the foundation from a copy of the original negative preserved by the National Film Archive of India. This 1948 film, for the first time, presented a lead actor as a dancer. It was shot entirely as a dance ballet and a fantasy. It marked the debut of the Shankar couple as well as the 17-year-old lead actor Padmini.
