The markets in all sectors of the city are likely to remain open throughout the week as traders,in a meeting on Thursday, expressed a desire to keep their shops open for all the seven days. The final decision, however, rests with the UT Administration.
Last year, the UT Administration had announced that shops would remain closed on Sundays, but the decision was opposed by a section of the traders while the rest agreed to it. The shops were allowed to remain open on Sunday till a final decision was taken. During a meeting on Thursday chaired by the Additional Deputy Commissioner Mahavir Kaushik, the traders opined that the markets should remain open on Sundays.
President of the Chandigarh Beopar Mandal Diwaker Sahoonja said that to compete with malls,it was important that the markets remain open all days of the week so that business was not affected. This would also promote the city as a tourist destination. He added that all labour laws would be followed.
JPS Kalra, general secretary of the Market Association,Sector 17 stated that an issue was raised to close the markets on three public holidays in a year. The rest of the days the markets should remain open. This would provide a place for the residents to go out on Sundays apart from visiting malls.
ADC Kaushik said a report would be prepared and a final decision taken by the Administration.
