Slum-dwellers made a beeline for the Chandigarh Housing Board (CHB),where allotment letters are being issued to beneficiaries under the rehabilitation scheme. However, they complained of facing problems, including ambiguity over the need for clearing electricity bills, while there were some who were turned away due to anomalies in their documents.
The list of beneficiaries for the one-room tenement at Dhanas was prepared by the UT Estate Office. CHB is now handing over the allotment letter prior to the Prime Ministers visit after scrutiny of the requisite documents enabling beneficiaries to shift to the tenements after Saturday.
A help desk was set up by the Chandigarh Territorial Youth Congress (CTYC) at the venue on Monday to assist the slum-dwellers. Vice-president of the unit,Harmail Kesri, said there was ambiguity over the clearance of electricity bills for the beneficiaries to be eligible to get houses.
The bills are pending for the past several years and the amounts vary for each household. The CHB is not giving them the allotment letter till the dues are cleared. We are requesting the authorities to collect the bill in installments, said Kesri.
Meanwhile,CTYC president Maninder Dhillon said people were coming to them with their problems and they were facilitating in solving these.
