Following complaints by nearly 100 inmates lodged in the modern jail over poor amenities provided to them, the district administration officials conducted raids in the jail complex on Thursday.

SDM Varinder Kumar, accompanied by Civil Surgeon Tejwant Singh, district health officer Surinder Kumar and DSP PS Sandhu, alongwith a team of five inmates inspected the jail kitchen ,stores, barracks and toilets. Food samples from the kitchen were collected while the quality of the raw material was also checked.

It may be noted that some inmates had on Wednesday lodged a complaint with the senior officials of Department of Jails and the local court complaining of inhuman conditions and “negative attitude of officials” at the jail.

The matter came to the notice of the court, when Rajinder Kumar, whose brother Ashwini Kumar is lodged in this jail, filed a complaint in the court stating that,“when my brother tried to raise his voice against the officials who are mistreating the jail inmates,he was brutally beaten up and now faces a false case.”

Meanwhile, the inmates have also complained to the court that the items available in the canteen are being sold at double the prices.

The session courts issued direction to the jail authorities to look into the issue.
