A throwback to the era of Dev Anand and Raj Kapoor, the Americano Shoe Store is where history meets the present. You feel that time has stood still as the shop still wears the same unpolished look — no fancy frills and props — as it did 50 years ago at the time of its inception.

Shop-owner Sarabjeet Kaur, who took over the business after the death of her father-in-law,recalls the days fondly. “This shop was started by my father-in law in the ‘50s. After marriage,I learnt all the tricks of the trade from him and soon followed in his footsteps.”

And how… CEOs of many multinationals would be envious of Kaur’s management skills as she still retains most of the staff who joined the shop when it first opened. Optimism is apparently what keeps them going. Despite the fierce competition and new technologies,Americano still prefers the conventional technique of making shoes.

“A lot of new shops are opening around here but it has not affected our business. We still maintain our loyal customer base who prefer our special handcrafted shoes made from pure leather over industrial products,” said Kaur.

The shoe store has also expanded into making orthopedic shoes. “It’s not simple; you need to put in your heart and soul to prepare a pair of such shoes. Creating such a pair takes about two to three days but I believe the wait is worth it. In fact, several of our customers come from abroad especially to buy these shoes as we provide the best,” Kaur signs off.
