Six out of eight garbage trucks that were inspected on Monday by the Mayor were not being driven by drivers appointed by the Municipal Corporation. The garbage trucks drivers have either sublet their work or have given their task to the helpers.

After being caught, drivers along with other sanitation staff staged a protest at the office of the Municipal Corporation in Sector 17. This came to light on Monday after the Mayor, who was supervising the cattle catching drive, found something amiss when a garbage truck crossed his car. The trucks after collecting garbage from different sectors deposit these at the Garbage Processing Plant at Dadumajra. The garbage that is deposited is weighed at the entrance of the plant.

Mayor Subhash Chawla went to the plant and asked the driver of the truck to show his licence. To this the driver said that he was not designated and was a helper. As many as eight trucks were checked of which six did not have designated drivers. The Mayor was informed that the drivers after filling the fuel tanks hand over the truck to the helpers. One of them was allegedly not even in town.

Cell phones of those who attempted to call the drivers were snatched. Pictures of these people have been given to the Municipal Commissioner. After the chain of events, the drivers staged a protest at the office of the Municipal Corporation. Chawla said that an inquiry into the issue would be conducted.
