Even five year after mooting proposal for introducing bicycles at the Panjab University (PU) campus, the authorities have failed to bring the green-campus plan into force.

Putting across the plan and showing keen interest in the plan, the Vice-Chancellor (V-C) had issued 15 bicycles to the senior officials of the University, however, all the cycles are lying unused.

The key idea was to promote cycling inside the campus by setting up various parking zones, the commuters could pick the cycles from one stand and park them at the spot near to their destination, ensuring free flow of the cycles-making the campus vehicle free.

To begin gradually, the V-C had decided to observe first Monday of every month as the vehicle-free day, however, the proposal failed to take-off.

Speaking to Newsline,V-C RC Sobti said,“I have always been very much interested in the activity. But I admit that I have failed to convince my staff to take up the plan. There is a resistance among everyone towards riding a bicycle even inside the campus.”

The green plans of Panjab University (PU) to introduce bicycles on the campus have been gathering dust. Once initiated to promote cycling on the campus so that traffic is eased, the 15 bicycles given to the PU top brass are lying unused.

The decision to observe the first Monday of every month as a vehicle-free day has also failed to gather momentum. It has turned out to be another announcement that has ended before take-off.

Fifteen bicycles were donated to the PU in 2007. Those were distributed among PU officials, including the Registrar, the Controller of Examination and the Dean Student Welfare (DSW). On the first day,Vice-Chancellor (VC) RC Sobti pedaled a bicycle across the campus.

It was also proposed that teachers pedal bicycles on the campus and set an example for students to emulate, but action on this idea was not initiated.
