The hip-replacement surgery of 104-year-old Chanan Devi was successfully conducted by Joint Replacement Surgeon Dr Harsimran Singh on December 29. This was announced by the Fortis Hospital today.

Chanan Devi, born at Dhaliwal in Punjab in 1904,performed all household chores by herself till she fractured her hip bone in a fall, which confined her to the bed.

Considering her age,Dr Singh decided to go for a minimally invasive surgery. Because of detailed planning, the surgery took 37 minutes and the patient lost only 100 mililitres of blood. She was able to stand with support, just 24 hours after surgery.

“I am happy that Chanan Devi will be able to live a good quality of life again,” said Dr Harsimran Singh.

The last decade has seen tremendous advances in the field of joint replacement surgery. “Gone are the days when the elderly had to be confined to bed in case of fractures or other joint-related problems. They can now lead normal lives,” said Dr Singh.

Chanan Devi said: “I was not sure of walking again but after the surgery,I have got a new lease of life.”
