The Chandigarh District Consumer Forum Tuesday directed a Sector 8-based travel company to give compensation of Rs 10,000, including Rs 5,000 as costs of litigation, to a resident of Sector 18 as the company had booked a flight which allowed two baggage but the complainants were asked to pay extra money by New York airport authorities. The forum also asked American Travel & Tours (P) Ltd Monday to refund Rs 7,440 that was charged by the airport authorities at New York.

The complainants, Sandeep Gilhotra and his wife Ranjna Gilhotra, stated in the complaint that they had purchased three air tickets from the company —two for themselves and one for their relative — for going to USA and Canada. The complainants alleged humiliation and torture at the airport as they were not allowed two bags and were compelled to make a payment of $120. Hence, a case in the consumer courts was filed on August 19, 2015. The travel agency stated denied its liability, however, later on it also did not turn up. Hence, ex-parte proceedings were initiated against them.
