A medical student hailing from Kerala and studying at the Manipal University was kidnapped in an autorickshaw on the night of June 30, 2013 while she was returning home to her apartment from the library on the university campus. She was raped by the gang at an isolated place near Ontibettu.

The girl reluctantly revealed the incident to care givers at the university hospital  after she was taken there with a broken leg following her ordeal.

The Udupi police cracked the case by following the trail of autorickshaw drivers in the region.

On Thursday following the conviction for their crimes the three main accused persons sought leniency in punishment from the court on the grounds that they needed to look after their ageing parents. The public prosecutor TS Jituri told the court that the attack on the girl did not merit leniency. After hearing both sides the judge pronounced the life sentence for the main accused for the offence of gang rape as well as a fine of Rs one lakh each.

In addition the court sentenced the trio to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 each for the offence of kidnap and seven years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 5000 for the offence of criminal intimidation. The punishment will run concurrently.
