The Adugodi police have managed to arrest all seven persons involved in the murder of a retired bank official last week during a bid to steal an antique necklace from his home in Lakkasandra in south Bangalore.

Investigation into the case where Uday Raj Singh, 65, and his wife were killed has revealed that the main accused, and the son of a retired army captain, had intended to steal an antique gold and diamond necklace in the possession of the couple in order to compensate financial losses he suffered in a business.

Madhu alias Madhusoodan, 27, an MBA graduate, earlier worked as as assistant manager in a private bank in Bangalore. He hatched the plan to rob the elderly couple of the necklace they had been advertising for sale in order to compensate clients whose wealth he had lost while trading on commodities, foreign exchange, equities, shares and derivatives after starting a franchisee trading firm in Mysore, deputy commissioner of police (south) H S Revanna said.

The other six accused who assisted Madhusoodhan in the attempted robbery and murder have been identified as Sathish, 25 of Mandya, Dileep Kumar, 24, Abhishek alias Abhi, 27, Sridhar PS, 31, Amith Kumar alias Bittu, 23, all from Mysore and Kiran, 28, of Hassan,
Madhusoodan had started a franchisee unit of Edelweiss Pvt Limited, a Tokyo-based share market firm, at Saraswathipuram in Mysore with his friends Rama Prasad and Sudarshan. The firm and its investors were allegedly swindled by Madhusoodhan’s friends resulting cheating cases being filed against him at Hospet, Tumkur, Doddaballapur and other places in the state, police said. The main accused had sustained losses of around Rs 1.2 crore in the business and depositors who had invested through him were incessantly demanding return of their money, police said.

This allegedly lead Madhusoodan to discuss his situation with Abhishek, who was the branch head of a firm in Mysore and aware about an antique necklace in the possession of Uday Raj Singh. Abhishek suggested the purchase the necklace at a low cost for subsequent sale at a huge profit. The duo visited Singh’s home a few times posing as customers for the necklace. Later they changed their mind and decided to snatch away the necklace rather than purchase it.

The accused allegedly reached the residence of the Singh couple around 3.15 pm on March 25. In the midst of a discussion, he pulled out a sharp edged weapon, snatched the necklace and slit the throat of Singh and attempted to flee the scene. Singh’s wife Susheela, who had repeatedly warned her husband against inviting strangers to their home to negotiate over the necklace, came out of a room hearing sounds and noticed that her husband had been attacked. She began screaming for help and the gang attacked her as well.

However, her screams alerted members of the public on the street who informed policemen nearby. They surrounded the house and managed to nab Madhusoodhan, Sathish and Dileep as they tried to escape. The others were picked on the basis of the information provided by this trio.
