Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) general secretary Gordhan Zadaphia and over 200 party workers were detained after they blocked traffic on National Highway 27 to protest against the alleged delay by the state government in disbursing crop insurance claims to farmers.

GPP workers raised slogans against the chief minister at Gondal Chowkdi around 9 am. They blocked traffic for almost half-an-hour despite police presence. The protesters were taken to the city police headquarters and released after an hour.

Zadaphia, who lost Assembly polls from Gondal seat last year, said insurance claims worth Rs 3,000 crore had to be paid, but insurance companies were unable to do so due to the disparities in details.

“The state government gave the insurance firms details of crop sowing in September. Then they did a re-survey and gave them another set of details, which was not congruous with the previous set. The insurance firms are befuddled as to which data they should rely on,” Zadaphia said, adding GPP would spread its agitation in other parts of Saurashtra in coming days.
