The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) has threatened to lay siege to the state Assembly on March 12 if the suspension of Leader of Opposition Shaktisinh Gohil was not withdrawn by March 9.

On Saturday, the state Congress held demonstrations at all the 26 district headquarters against the suspension of Gohil and strongly condemned the alleged “undemocratic” and “dictatorial” functioning of the state government within the House.

Addressing the party workers outside the Town Hall here,GPCC President Arjun Modhwadia said,“The Congress will take account of the BJP government and seek answers on March 12 if it did not withdraw the suspension order by then.”

He said the party would also make representation before the state Governor kamla Beniwal and President of India Pratibha Patil about the “unconstitutional” action of the government to suspend the Congress leader raising the issues of corruption inside the House.

Stating that the state government was not above the constitution and the ruling party leaders, including Chief Minister Narendra Modi, were bound to follow the constitutional provisions,Modhwadia said the Congress was the opposition party in the state and it was its constitutional rights to raise the public voice.

Others who spoke at the Town Hall include former deputy chief minister Narhari Amin,Ahmedabad City Congress Committee President Pankaj Shah,Rajya Sabha member Pravin Rashtrapal,MLA Farooq Sheikh and GPCC General Secretary Khurshid Saiyed.

Meanwhile,in Surat,Congress leader Shankersinh Vaghela held out the same ultimatum while addressing a rally of party workers.

Vaghela also took a dig at actor Amitabh Bachchan, who is the brand ambassador of Gujarat Tourism.

“We were under the impression that Amitabh is doing the campaigning for free. But recently,we came to know the government had spent Rs 40 crore on the promotion. One day,the government will have to answer to the public.”

UPA chief Sonia Gandhi’s political secretary Ahmed Patel, who was in Bharuch on Saturday, also spoke out on Gohil’s suspension. “In a democratic country, everyone has a right to speak. It is sad that immediate action was taken to suspend Shantkisinh Gohil,” he said.
