Vulture count hits a new low

The population of vultures in the state had come down to 1,065 in May 2010 from 2,539 in 2007 and 1,431 in 2008,state’s Forest & Environment Minister Mangubhai Patel stated in a written reply to a question from Karjan MLA Chandu Dabhi on Thursday.

The population of vultures in the state had come down to 1,065 in May 2010 from 2,539 in 2007 and 1,431 in 2008,state’s Forest & Environment Minister Mangubhai Patel stated in a written reply to a question from Karjan MLA Chandu Dabhi on Thursday.

The number of Sarus Crane,as in May 2010,was 1,599.

According to the minister,the government has not only taken up an awareness campaign for conservation of vultures,but has also started a vulture-breeding centre at Sakkarbaug Zoo in Junagadh.

Patel said the as per the 2007 count,the population of the Great Indian Bustard in Kutch area was 48. He said a sanctuary has been proposed in Kutch for the conservation of the endangered bird.
