The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) on Tuesday took possession of an Amul dairy parlour situated inside the Sayajibaug garden in Vadodara. On Monday evening, the High Court asked the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) to vacate the outlet that was taken by the dairy major on lease and maintained by the Baroda Dairy.
VMC officials pulled off the boards and hoardings of the Baroda Dairy parlour from the premises of the garden after the HC upheld the decision of the corporation to discontinue the lease to the parlour. The GCMMF,which had got a stay on the VMC decision earlier this year, suffered a blow when the HC revoked the stay and allowed the VMC to take possession of its property within the garden on Monday.
The move comes after the VMC,earlier this year, decided against granting land to the dairy at concessional rates in the garden. Following the decision, the VMC had not renewed the lease agreement with the GCMMF last year. The milk cooperative had, however, brought about a stay by the High Court on the VMCs decision.
Town Development Officer,VMC,K L Patel said the structure was on lease with the GCMMF for three years which was discontinued last year. The GCMMF had brought in a stay to continue to operate their business inside the garden. However, the High Court has now revoked the stay and ruled in favour of the VMC. We have only taken back into possession our own property. Patel said that the future use of the structure will be decided by the VMC at a later stage.
Sources in the VMC said that this was a step in the direction of putting up land blocks inside the garden premises for competitive auction in order to increase profit amount for the corporation. Last year, conceding to a request by the GCMMF,the Land and Estate (commercial) Department of the civic body had agreed to allot plots of 300 square metres each to the milk cooperative at an annual rent of 15 per cent of the price of the land on government records, but not less than Rs 72,000,for 10 years.
This decision was turned down by the standing committee in March this year, which ruled in favour of competitive auctions for the plots. Sources say the possession of the structure at a prime location inside the Sayajibaug compound will now pave way for a fierce competitive auction between the big dairy players like Baroda Dairy,Havmor and many other franchises.
