The Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC) passed the annual budget for the coming financial year during the special general board meeting on Thursday, even as the opposition members staged a walkout.
The proposed tax of Rs 3 crore for sanitation of the city was passed through voting system in which 64 members voted in its favour and six members from the Congress voted against levying the tax.
Heated arguments took place between the ruling BJP and Congress members regarding the allocation of funds from the Centre for development projects under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
BJP members argued that it is the VMC,through the state government funds, which is paying more than the grants allocated as part of the JNNURM. Congress members alleged that the ruling party has been taking credit for the initiatives taken by the Centre.
After the Congress members walked out,the remaining proposals were sanctioned as per the procedure.
