Condemning the rape and murder of a girl in Nani Dhari village of Amreli, which turned out to be a case of suspected honour killing,Leader of Opposition in the state Assembly Shankersinh Vaghela on Tuesday alleged that anti-social elements had gained an upper hand in the state under the existing political dispensation. He said that the anti-social elements, who attacked the funeral procession of the girl and killed one person, had no fear of police as the law and order situation was out of control of the state government.
He added that this was not the first incident of its kind. Earlier,a Koli Patel girl was allegedly raped and killed near Junagadh, but the government did not take any action in the matter. A Dalit youth was shot dead in police firing during a protest to demand justice for Dalits in Surendranagar district.
Vaghela demanded a thorough probe into the Nani Dhari incident and police protection to the family of the deceased. He also urged authorities to take stern action against the accused. He said a Congress delegation would visit the affected family, collect details of the incident, and submit it to the state government to demand justice.
