In an attempt to display political one-upmanship during Urban Development and Revenue Minister Anandiben Patel’s speech,Congress leaders, who were sharing the dais with her at the inaugural function for the Slum Rehabilitation Committee (SRC) housing schemes, staged a walk-out,shouting out the figures owed by the state government to the Central government.

Just as Anandiben began speaking on the BJP’s achievements in making life easier for the common man in the state, the Congress leaders staged the walk-out. She was forced to cut short her speech at the inaugural function in Vadodara, when Chandrakant Shrivastav and other Congress leaders present at the function walked out of the stage and the venue.

A political mud-slinging broke out when Patel, during her address to the public, remarked that the rise in prices and inflation were all doings of the Congress.

Chandrakant Shrivastav, who was sharing the dais with Anandiben, and even lit the inaugural lamp, earlier during the function, stormed out of the stage and then questioned her about the money that the state government was receiving from the Congress-led UPA government in the Centre.

“Anandiben said the Congress government is responsible for the price rise. The function was a VMC event and not a BJP function for Anandiben to start campaigning for the party. We questioned her on why she did not mention the very scheme that she had come to inaugurate as part of projects funded by the Central government,” a furious Shrivastav said, while pointing out that 50 per cent of the revenue for the project has come from the Central government.

Following this confrontation,Congress councillors walked out of the venue.

Anandiben was in Vadodara to inaugurate a housing scheme under the SRC scheme,as per an MoU of the Vibrant Gujarat Summit of 2011. The project has been approved under the re-development policies of 2010 and is being constructed by NA Construction in Vadodara.

As per plans, about 87 slum families will be rehabilitated in the housing project as well as a private wing will be sold by the developers. Anandiben, who was accompanied by Minister of Power and Energy Saurabh Patel, also inaugurated the VMC Ward office for ward number 8 and a guest house at Diwalipura.
