Two probationer sub-inspectors (SIs) are now facing inquiries against them in the extortion racket that was recently exposed when a call centre owner in Ahmedabad filed a complaint against them for extorting Rs 50 lakh. The SIs allegedly claimed that the extortion bid was planned by a senior rank officer who instructed them to execute his plan.
The complainant,Sunil Nagrani, who owns In Corporation,a call centre in Nehrunagar area of the city, had filed an application with the ACP P C Joshi that probationer SI P K Goswami and four others were demanding Rs 50 lakh to shut down a case they threatened to file against him for running the call centre without licence and registration.
Nagranis application shocked the senior officials of Ahmedabad police and ordered an official inquiry against Goswami and four others, who were a part of the group that extorted money at the complainants office. As per the complaint, the second SI had faked his name as Rajendra Singh and entered his office with four constables and probationer SI Goswami.
The extortionists had threatened Nagrani that they would fix him in a bigger case and if he wanted to save himself he must pay Rs 50 lakh. However, after several arguments,Nagrani requested the cops to take Rs 14 lakh and go. Though the cops agreed, they allegedly threatened him again.
The sources said that senior cops in Ahmedabad police had sent the sub-inspectors for extorting money from Nagrani who reportedly is well connected in the police department. The senior Ahmedabad police officials looked into the complaint and ordered an inquiry to be done by ACP of L division J C Patel.
An officer related to the probe said,The probationer SI A A Jadeja, who is posted in Anandnagar police station,is the second accused along with Goswami. Jadeja and Goswami took the constables into their confidence and hatched a plan to target Nagrani. They are alleging that their officers senior had planned this. However, that has to be probed.
The sources further said that N division ACP V D Gohil, posted in Ahmedabad, had allegedly instructed the SI for the extortion bid.
The sources stated that the SIs,when told about the complaint against them by their bosses in Satellite and Anandnagar police stations, had raised the issue with the Jt Commissioner of Police Ajay Tomar that only the lower-rung cops are arrested in extortion cases. The senior police officials, who are supervising the probe, transferred ACP Gohil to the city police control room after his name cropped up in investigations.
Tomar said,The ACP has been transferred to the control room with immediate effect and both the probationer sub-inspectors would face strict action in a few days. After the inquiry finishes, their reports would be sent for final action on their tenure. We are also probing the case to find out others who are involved in the case.
The inquiry would be conducted into all the six police officials and their statements would be recorded. The inquiry report would be submitted to the Ahmedabad police commissioner.
