The meltdown-hit diamond industry has forced many workers to either commit suicide or take to criminal activities to tide over their crises.

In separate incidents in Surat, two jobless diamond polishers were arrested with a loaded country-made pistol, while in the second incident,a jobless polisher committed suicide by jumping into the Tapi.

According to the details of the case, the Varachha police intercepted two youths near the Railway culvert on Friday for moving around suspiciously. They failed to provide satisfactory answers when questioned, following which they were frisked. This led to the recovery of the weapon along with 11 cartridges worth Rs 10,000.

Varachha Inspector V B Patel said the two accused — Hitesh Ravjibhai,a resident of Sharda Vihar society at Ashwani Kumar Road in Varachha, and Pritesh Patel,a resident of Patel society in Punagam — were colleagues in a diamond factory at Punagam and had been jobless since Diwali. They tried for jobs at different units and later came into contact with one Rajubhai from whom they purchased the pistol and the live cartridges,he said.

He added: “During interrogation, the two confessed to have committed theft of cash, mobile phones and a gold chain from a locker in the Chhab Chhaba Chhab water park at Hazira,a couple of months ago. We suspect their involvement in other thefts in Varachha, about which we will learn during their remand period.

The second incident involved Satish Agrawat (21),a resident of Vaidhraj Road at Ashwani Kumar Road in Varachha. Agrawat left his house on Wednesday, informing his wife that he was going out in search of a job. He did not return till late at night following which his father,Bhagwandas, went out on his lookout, and later lodged a missing complaint with the Varachha police station.

On the basis of a tip-off,the fire brigade fished out a body from the Tapi at Kapodara. The police took charge of the body and informed Bhagwandas, who identified it at the New Civil Hosptial.

The police said Satish was facing difficulty in finding a job to run his house. He was jobless for the last three months and this might have forced him to take the extreme step. They said Satish must have jumped into the Tapi from the Amroli Bridge.
