Theft accused dies in police custody in Surat

They were produced before the Surat District Court on Monday which remanded them to police custody till June 27, police said.

A youth, who was an alleged accused in a theft case, Tuesday morning died in police custody at Udhna police station here after complaining of respiratory problem, police said.

Mohabbat Singh (35), a resident of Ahmedabad, was arrested along with three others- Altaf Shaikh, Abbas Beg Mirza and Shaikh Irfan – on June 19 in connection with theft of Rs 32 lakh cash from a dry fruit packaging unit located at Udhna industrial area. They were produced before the Surat District Court on Monday which remanded them to police custody till June 27, police said.

On Tuesday early morning, Mohabbat Singh, complained of suffocation inside the lock-up and he was allowed to sleep outside the lock-up. When the police tried to wake him up he could not respond. Immediately, Mohabbat was rushed to New Civil hospital for treatment where doctors declared him brought dead. Two of his accomplices, Abbas and Altaf, were also brought to the hospital for treatment of respiratory problem.
