Surat police commissioner Satish Sharma on Friday suspended 13 policemen for alleged dereliction of duty. Over 50 traffic policemen had remained absent on the Gujarati new year day — Monday — without informing their superiors. In their absence, autorickshaw drivers had manned traffic junctions.
According to sources, Sharma was returning to Surat from Vadodara on Monday. To his shock, the police commissioner who entered the city through Kamrej found that there was no traffic policeman at important traffic junctions leading to traffic jams. Some auto drivers were found manning the traffic jams.
Immediately, the CP called R F Sanghada, DCP (Traffic), and asked him to inquire and furnish the names of 50 traffic policemen who had been assigned duty from Sarthana to Athwalines traffic junctions, but remained absent without prior permission. Out of 50 policemen who remained absent, 13 were ASI and head constables. “We have suspended 13 policemen for dereliction of duty. With such action, in coming days, no policemen will resort to dereliction of duty,” Sharma said.
