Lioness found dead in Junagadh
A two-year-old lioness was found dead outside the Girnar sanctuary in Junagadh district, said forest officials on Monday. A post-mortem at Sakkarbaug Zoo later in the day showed the death was caused by a respiratory tract infection brought on by the lioness and weakened immunity due to tape and round worms that had infected its intestines, said Aragana Sahoo,Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF),Junagadh. The lioness had been located as late as 9 pm Sunday by forest staff.
Around 11 am Monday,a forest beat-guard was alerted that a dead lioness was found at Puneet Sai Ashram,Madhavna taleti, which is adjacent to the sanctuary area. Sahoo said such illnesses were more common in young, adolescent carnivores.
