A Gujarat National Law University (GNLU) student has accused its Director of making casteist remark and has lodged a complaint with the Kalol police in Gandhinagar against him. Police have registered a case against the Director,Bimal N Patel, under Scheduled Castes & Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.
The complainant has been identified as Manish Meena (23),a third-year student of GNLU and a resident of Bhilwara in Rajasthan. According to the student, the incident occurred on March 7. Meena and two other third-year students were allegedly stopped on their way to a musical night. Their baggage was allegedly checked by the Director and two faculty members in the hostel premises. The complainant claims he was allegedly singled out and frisked by the Director. After cigarettes were recovered from him and another student, the Director allegedly made a casteist slur. The student claims his brother,Surendra, tried to get in touch with the Director for a meeting, but failed. He subsequently decided to lodge an FIR against the director on April 16 with the Kalol police.
The Kalol police are currently investigating the case. K S Savani,Deputy Superintendent of Police, said,The investigations are on. We have recorded the statements of the three boys and are yet to record the statement of the Director.
Patel told The Indian Express,I cannot even think of doing something like that. I dont know what is the motive behind this. He added that the students were trying to relate one issue with another. There was a student named Vikas Meena who had pleaded that he could not afford tuition and exam fees and his case had been referred to our Equal Opportunity Cell (E0C). Then, they came to me with documents on Vikass fee case which also accused me of making casteist remarks on one Manish Meena. I dont know what they are talking about. But now we have referred both cases to the EOC. This is pure harassment of the entire university, staff and its students, he said.
