The Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) on Saturday passed a one-line resolution authorising party chief Sonia Gandhi to take a final decision regarding selection of candidates for the Assembly elections due this year-end.
The decision, according to sources, was taken since there was hectic lobbying by party leaders for their own nominees.
The mood in the Congress camp is upbeat and many leaders feel the party is within the striking distance of regaining power after a gap of 17 years. In fact, several MPs are said to have expressed their willingness to contest the Assembly elections.
The meeting held in Gandhinagar on Saturday was attended by,among others, state Congress president Arjun Modhwadia,AICC general secretary and state in-charge Mohan Prakash,Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader Shaktisinh Gohil and chairman of partys election campaign committee Shankersinh Vaghela.
The leaders appealed to the 26 members of the election campaign committee that they should not lobby for their own nominees.
The committee also passed two more resolutions. The first said that while Chief Minister Narendra Modi had no time to visit the families of farmers who committed suicide owing to crop failure,he was using official machinery to receive industrialists like Suzuki chief and take out yatras.
The second resolution declared that the Congress would continue to assist the drought-hit people and provide fodder for cattle in drought-hit areas.
