The release of water by the state irrigation department from Meshwo dam in Machchan rivers downstream has been claimed as a victory of the farmers by the state Congress leaders.
The dam is located in Bhiloda taluka of the Sabarkantha district. Constructed in 1971-72,the dam having a catchment area of over 259 square kilometres is meant for irrigation purposes and flood control.
State Congress leaders on April 3 had taken out a rally from Bhiloda to Shamlaji, demanding that water be released from the dam into the Machchan rivers downstream to ensure that areas on both sides of the river become fertile and increase of underground water-level. The Congress leaders led by Balubhai Patel had threatened to stage rasta roko and a sit-in at the dam site if the water was not released within 15 days.
Partys vice-president Girish Parmar said the previous Congress government always released the water every year during Poonam but the BJP government gave up the practice for over a decade, resulting into the problem of drinking water during summer for the villagers.
Meanwhile, senior Congress leaders including party’s state in-charge Mohan Prakash will address a series of public meetings as part of its ongoing programme Hisaab do,jawab do Jan Sampark Parivartan Yatra to mobilise people in different regions of the state.
