A fisherman was killed while his two fellow sailors were injured after their boat was allegedly hit by a larger fishing trawler off Dwarka coast in Devbhoomi Dwarka district in the wee hours of Friday. According to Dwarka police, Ali Gadh (18), Jani Pateliya (30) and his brother Jakub Pateliya (28) – all residents of Rupen harbour near Dwarka, were fishing on board their boat Saibaba off Okhamadhi coast near Dwarka around 12 am when a larger fishing trawler came too close to them and damaged their fishing net. The sailors of Saibaba had an argument with those of the larger trawler, suspected to be from Porbandar. The trawler sailors agreed to pay compensation for damaging the fishing net of the Rupen fishermen. However, about an hour later, a trawler rammed into Saibaba. Under the impact of the collision, Saibaba capsized and the three sailors fell overboard.

Police said that Gadh did not know swimming and drowned. Jani and Jakub suffered burn injuries as hot diesel fell on them, but the duo managed to keep afloat with the help of some derbies. They were rescued by another trawler from Porbandar at around 7 am, said police.

“The two boats collided at midnight and prima facie, it seems a mistake by the Porbandar trawler,” Dwarka police inspector Narendrasinh Rana said.
