A Bollywood film producer-director was arrested Tuesday night by city police on charges of cheating a city-based builder of Rs 22 lakh,which he had borrowed to produce a film Meri Biwi Ka Jawab Nahi,a 2004-flick starring Akshay Kumar and Sridevi.
As per complaint,producer Iqbal Ahmed Sheikh allegedly borrowed Rs 22 lakh from builder Raman Patel to finance the movie on condition that he will sell him the movies distribution rights in Gujarat territory and will pay him back the money with interest.
When Sheikh failed to either sell him the distribution rights to Patel or return him the borrowed money,Patel approached him for money,upon which Sheikh threatened him in the name of underworld. Patel approached the local court which ordered the police to arrest Sheikh. However,he was absconding since then. Police arrested him Tuesday night from his residence at Gendigate road in Vadodara.
Sheikh is associated with Mumbai film industry since 1983 and runs a production company called Iqbal Production,Sayajigunj police said. He was residing at his Mumbai residence since last several years.
Sheikh had entered into a contract with Patel that he will offer the distribution rights of the movie to Patel and will return him the money once the movie is completed and distributed. However,when the film was completed,Sheikh released the movie through his own distribution company without even intimating Patel. In Vadodara,the movie was released in Aradhana Talkies, police said.
When Patel approached Sheikh to collect the borrowed money,Sheikh allegedly threatened him,saying he has been working in Bollywood since several years and has contacts in the underworld,which he can use any time. Patel understood by then that he had been cheated of his money and therefore approached local court,which ordered Sayajigunj police to arrest Sheikh.
