The Maninagar police on Saturday arrested Dipesh Thakkar, the prime suspect in the Bhumi Upadhyaya murder case, from Nalanda Hotel in Navrangpura. Bhumi’s boyfriend and colleague, Dipesh (33),had been absconding ever since her body had been recovered from an underground water tank in a tenement near Prerna Park in Maninagar last week.

Giving details of his arrest,Inspector Bharat Barot posted at Maninagar police station said,“Although his parents and brothers were supportive of him, others in the family were not.”

He added: “We took the help of Dipesh’s brother-in-law,Ronal Thakkar,to summon him and arrested him when he arrived. We also took the help of Navrangpura police to ensure that he didn’t run away.”

According to Barot, the police had launched a manhunt for Dipesh but he always managed to give them the slip.

“He used to escape before we reached or maybe we had wrong information. We had extended our search operations from Kadi,Kalol to Nadiad and further,” he explained.

Meanwhile,Dipesh’s parents and brother, who are in judicial custody, have been charged with destroying evidence and concealing the truth.

Bhumi was a resident of Arpan Apartment near L G Hospital in Maninagar. She used to take high school classes at the Shraddha Group Tuition in Dipesh’s residence. Dipesh used to earlier work in Lotus School in Maninagar and had left his job three years ago to start his own tuition classes.

According to the police,Dipesh wanted to marry Bhumi, but as she was getting engaged to someone else,he killed her in a fit of rage.

He poisoned her first and then strangled her with a rope. Her body was put in a sack and then thrown in the underground water tank on March 21.

Confessions of a killer

In his statement to the Maninagar police on Saturday,Dipesh said that Bhumi had come to his house on Friday to sort out an issue with him. Bhumi had demanded her love letters and pictures be returned to her, which Dipesh had refused. When she met him on Friday,he laced her coffee with sedatives. He then strangled her with a rope and put her body in the wheat sack. He also scratched her body, which was confirmed in the post mortem report. Even as he was carrying out this dastardly act,his students were sitting on the verandah.
