The tax collection drive of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation (VMC),which generally gains momentum in March,is likely to be affected this year.
The reason: most officials associated with the civic bodys tax collection process are currently involved in poll-related activities.
If officials at the revenue department of the corporation are to be believed, the total loss to the body would amount to Rs 5 crore. Moreover, the process for the year 2009-10 would be delayed because of technical reasons.
Every year,we collect taxes worth Rs 4 crore during March. But this time,it has coincided with the elections. From water tax to property tax and other taxes are collected through regular drives. But most of the officials, including those at ward level, have not been able to focus on it, said Assistant Municipal Commissioner (Revenue) R M Patel.
Further, the correction work in the cases having some irregularities in the final bills will be delayed and that would eventually affect the final billing process for the year 2009-10,he said.
The ward officers are supposed to take care of the bills wherein the correction amount is between Rs 50,000 and Rs 1 lakh. The bills having the correction amount above this will be taken care of by assistant municipal commissioners, said Patel.
