The heatwave and marriage season is making it difficult for political parties to draw people out of their homes and attend election rallies for the June 2 bypolls for the three Assembly and a Lok Sabha seat in Saurashtra.
The campaigning is going on slowly. The marriage season is on and the temperature during daytime is too high. So,our election meetings have got very cold response so far, said district president of a main political party on Monday.
On top of all this, people believe these bye-elections have been imposed on them. So,they are somewhat listless, the president further said.
The district president of another main political party, too, conceded the turnout of people at their rallies had remained low so far. We blame it on the current heat wave and the marriage season. This is the reason we are scheduling our public meeting late in the evening, he said.
Bypolls are being held for Jetpur and Dhoraji Assembly constituencies in Rajkot district and Limdi Assembly seat in Surendranagar along with Porbandar Lok Sabha constituency. Morva Hadaf Assembly seat in the Panchmahals and Banaskantha Lok Sabha seat are also going to the polls on the same day.
While Dhoraji and Jetpur seats had fallen vacant after Leuva strongman Vitthal Radadiya and his Son Jayesh resigned as Congress MLAs from the twin seats respectively to join the BJP early in March. Radadia senior had resigned as MP from Porbandar to continue as MLA from Dhoraji after the December state Assembly elections. Limdi too had fallen vacant after Congresss Soma Patel resigned as an MLA to continue as an MP. Morva Hadaf and Banaskantha had fallen vacant following deaths of incumbents.
However, the campaigning is expected to gain some momentum with state leaders of the Congress and the BJP starting a series of rallies from Monday onwards.
