Static surveillance teams deployed by the Election Commission on Tuesday seized a total of Rs 11 lakh in cash at Sankheda and Dabhoi Assembly constituencies.

After initial enquiry, both cases were handed over to the Income Tax department.

A surveillance team found Rs 5.5 lakh in cash being transported on a Maruti Omni van in Sankheda taluka and informed the flying squad, which intercepted the vehicle and questioned the driver, one Moin Makrani.

When the driver could not give a satisfactory answer, the vehicle’s owner, one Vimal Patel from Chhotaudepur, was called. He said he had just sold his Innova SUV and was paid in cash, but could not provide documents.

In yet another incident,a separate team nabbed one Manharlal Jaiswal, who was carrying Rs 5.5 lakh on a Hyundai vehicle at Kelanpur in Dabhoi.

“He initially said he had collected money after selling his land and was going to buy another plot in Dabhoi. When he failed to provide any document, the cash was seized and was handed over to the I-T department,” an election official said.
