The state capital went into a momentary tizzy when Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s mother Hiraba went to perform a customary ritual at her youngest son Pankaj’s new home in Sargasan village of Gandhinagar on Wednesday. Hiraba, who is 90 years old, lives with Pankaj Modi in Sector 22 of Gandhinagar city at least for the last ten years. The youngest Modi is an employee of the Information department of the Gujarat government.
Hiraba had last been in the news because of an intimidating Facebook post recently, which had alerted intelligence officials. Gandhinagar SP Sharad Singhal said, “There is no security threat to her. She is shifting to a bungalow due to personal reasons.”
The Gandhinagar police, however, added that her “discreet security cover” will continue wherever she goes as she is not under the Special Protection Group cover. After Modi became the PM, she was offered SPG security cover. However, after she denied it, the SPG personnel were sent back. Hiraba will be given a security plan at the new bungalow too. When contacted, Prahlad Modi, PM Narendra Modi’s younger brother, said, “My brother Pankaj Modi has got a new residence in Sargasan area in Gandhinagar and my mother will most probably move with him.”
However, Somabhai Modi, the PM’s eldest brother, who shuttles between Vadnagar and Ahmedabad, said,”My mother Hiraba can live with any of the five brothers as per her wishes. I don’t see how her address is relevant to people.”
Superintendent of Police Singhal added, “We will first study the details of the bungalow and design the security cover for her.”
Additional Chief Secretary (Home) S K Nanda said, “Her son is retiring. S,o he has to shift from government residence to a private accommodation. She’s moving along with him. There are no other reasons behind it.”
