BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s guaranteed presence in Bhopal for a mega rally on September 25 has come with a price tag. Till a few days ago,it was not clear whether Modi would attend the ‘Karyakarta Mahakumbha’,billed by the party as the world’s largest gathering of workers of one political organisation.

Once his participation was confirmed, the party decided to charge Rs 5 as registration fee from each worker who will turn up at Bhopal’s Jamboree Maidan,on the occasion of birth anniversary of Deendayal Upadhyay.

The mega event was supposed to mark the culmination of Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan’s Jan Ashirwad Yatra. His yatra, however, will continue even in October to cover remaining constituencies. The party tried hard to convey that the registration fee was not inspired by Modi’s Hyderabad rally which was criticised for a similar fee.

“We are charging the registration fee for the first time because we want to know in advance the exact count of workers who will arrive in Bhopal,’’ Ajay Pratap Singh,a BJP leader involved in Chouhan’s current Yatra, said. BJP campaign chief Anil Dave said Bhopal event is different because it’s a workers’ convention unlike the Hyderabad rally that was meant for public. He said no money will be charged from public on September 25.

Congress has slammed the registration fee calling it “Modi’s price decided by Chouhan’’. Vice-president of PCC Rameshwar Nikhara also claimed that Muslims will not attend the event because they associate Modi with Gujarat riots. “Trained RSS workers dressed like Muslims will attend the rally,’’ he claimed.
