The Assembly bypoll for the Surat West seat passed off peacefully, recording a voter turnout of 54.13 per cent on Wednesday. The counting of votes will be held at Gandhi Engineering College in Surat on Sunday.

Though 12 candidates contested for the seat – including 10 Independent candidates – it was largely seen as a straight fight between the Congress candidate D L Patel and BJP’s Purnesh Modi. Both the candidates claimed that they would emerge victorious.

The polling started at 8 am in 201 polling stations, out of which some were identified as sensitive. There were a total of 2.02 lakh registered voters among 4.02 lakh total population in the constituency.

During Assembly elections held last year, this seat had recorded a turnout of 65 per cent, when BJP candidate Kishor Vankawala won with the margin of 65,000 votes defeating the nearest Congress candidate. The election for this seat was necessitated after Vankawala passed away earlier this year.
