The Gujarat State Council for Blood Transfusion (GSCBT) has launched a short messaging service (SMS) for the public to help them know the availability status in 120 blood banks in the state.
GSCBT launched the service after a Strength Weakness Opportunities and Threats (SWOT) analysis. According to GSCBT officials,a person in need of blood can send an SMS to 8866100108 to know the availability of any particular blood group.
We conducted a small SWOT analysis in Ahmedabad. While there are many opportunities and strengths, the weakness could be continuous and daily updating of the stock at GSCBT as well as blood banks maintaining privacy about the units of the blood they have, said council member Dr Rajesh Gopal.
The project was conceptualised around three years ago,but it took time to encourage the blood banks to take such an initiative, which could bring more transparency in their work.
On the need for this service,Dr Gopal said that over 50 per cent people in the state are cellphone savvy, which is too high in comparison to states like Kerala and Tamil Nadu.
Such projects were started in cities like Chennai and Delhi, but it could not succeed. In case of Gujarat,we are more hopeful as information technology works better here, he said.
Officials said information will be updated manually on the Internet.
