More than four dozen engineering students from the Nirma Institute of Technology on Saturday cleaned garbage from the Municipal Market on C G Road and loaded them in the garbage collection vehicle of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation.

The exercise was conducted by the institute with a view to creating cleanliness awareness among the people. Though the place is located in the upmarket area,it was littered with garbage thrown by the customers after eating at the restaurants and food stalls in the market.

Some of the students — Saiyed Ahmed Usama,Kavin Shah,Raunaq Shah and Ankil Shah — said the exercise was part of the “green initiative” of their institute.

They said despite the fact that education had increased among the people, civic awareness had not increased proportionately and that was the reason why people threw the garbage on the footpath, roadside and in front of the shops etc.
