A murder suspect escaped from the lockup of Kosamba police by pushing aside the assistant sub-inspector when the cop went to give him a cup of tea in the morning on Wednesday. Hours later, the police officer was arrested for negligence of duty and lodged in the same lockup.

Police said Dilip Thackrey,a farmer and a resident of Old Kosamba outpost in Surat district, was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly killing his wife following a quarrel over some unknown issue.

On Wednesday, when ASI Narpatsinh Udaysinh opened the lock up to give him tea,Thackrey managed to flee. The police carried out an extensive operation in the neighbouring jungles but failed to locate him.

Later in the day,a complaint was registered against Thackrey and Udaysinh, following which the ASI was arrested.

Circle police inspector L J Solanki said,“We have booked Udaysinh for negligence of duty. He had opened the lockup to give tea to the suspect. He should have taken precautions by keeping a few constables with him before opening the lockup. We have sent teams to different places in search of Thackrey.”
