After Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scheme in the memory of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay called Shramev Jayate Karyakram in October, the Maharaja Sayajirao University (MSU) in Vadodara has introduced a short-term course on the political thinker, RSS ideologue and  member of the Bhartiya Jan Sangh.

On Wednesday, at a ceremony to mark the death anniversary of Upadhyay, attended by Gujarat education minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama and former Rajya Sabha MP and chairman, Research & Development Foundation for Integral Humanism, New Delhi, Dr Maheshchandra Sharma, MSU announced that a short-term course on integral humanism, based on the teachings of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, will be offered by the Centre for Lifelong Learning, MSU under the university’s recently constituted chair, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adhishthan. According to the management of MSU, the course is the “need of the hour” in order to study the various aspects of Upadhyay’s philosophy and his contributions to the development of the nation. The chair has been constituted under the Institute of Policy Research and International Studies, Faculty of Arts.

Dr Maheshchandra Sharma, who holds a PhD on Upadhyay’s philosophy, has been instrumental in sketching the short course that will see its first batch from April 22 to 26. MSU’s Syndicate member Jigar Inamdar, who will oversee the course, said, “Upadhyayji’s ideology is not the ideology of the BJP, but of the nation. If a person has to work in the society then he has to be sound ideologically and the course is needed for imparting that knowledge to the interested persons. Upadhyay’s dream of Akhand Bharat is not a political ideology, but a way of life.”

Inamdar has also translated into Gujarati, Sharma’s compilation of a book by Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Ekatma Manav Darshan.

Through the course, the MSU hopes to fulfil its “aim of preparing the young generation for leadership through the concept of Integral Humanism”.  The Gujarati and Hindi versions of the e-book, along with their audio book version, were also released at the event.

According to Inamdar, the book brings to light the philosophy of “Sabka saath, sabka vikas” in very simple manner.

Ram Madhav, RSS leader who is now in the BJP, missed the event due to a delay in his connecting flight from London, Inamdar said. The University had constituted the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya Adhishthan on February 1.
