Modi to flag off ‘Run for Unity’ in Vadodara

Around 7,500 participants will run for which the prize money is Rs 25 lakh.

The stage is set for the grand “Run for Unity” that will be flagged off by Chief Minister Narendra Modi from Navlakhi Ground in Vadodara and former deputy prime minister L K Advani from Ahmedabad,apart from other national BJP leaders,in states outside Gujarat on Sunday.

Coinciding with the 63rd death anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel,nearly 30 lakh people had registered by Saturday evening for the run by Saturday evening from nearly 600 locations across the India,a majority from Gujarat.

According to Modi’s website,this run would beat the previous record in which 1.2 lakh people participated. This time,over 1.85 lakh participants have registered to participate in the programme from Vadodara alone where it will be flagged off in two batches at 7. 30 am and 8 am,by Modi.

Around 7,500 participants will run in two categories of 15 and 21 kilometres for which the prize money is Rs 25 lakh. The two categories will be part of the Vadodara International Marathon,a private annual marathon event organiser. A 5-kilometre marathon run,“Run for Unity” will be flagged off at 8 am and is expected to draw over 1 lakh participants,organisers said.

“We are expecting around 1.5 lakh residents from Vadodara and outside to participate in the marathon that will be flagged off by CM Modi at 7:30 am and 8:00 am in two batches. Almost all eminent personalities in the city will join in the run,” Vadodara collector Vinod Rao said. Over 500 such eminent personalities will participate,he said.

City police have made elaborate security arrangements,deploying 2,500 police jawans and 6 companies of SRP on the route of the run. One DIG,3 DCPs,7 ACPs and 25 Police Inspectors along with 115 PSI will supervise the police teams. The entire run will closely be monitored by aerial surveillance team and the city has been put under CCTV surveillance.

The 21-km run will pass through Lalbaug overbridge, Rajmahal Road,Vishwamitri overbridge,Chhani circle,Fatehgunj circle,Kalaghoda,before ending at the Navlakhi ground. The 15-km run will skip Chhani route and will instead reach Fatehgunj circle before ending at Navlakhi ground,officials organising the event said.

In Nadiad town,where Sardar Patel was born at Bati Khatri locality,around 35,000 participants are expected to run to pay tribute to the Iron Man of India. The 2-kilometre stretch will pass through Patel’s birth place after being flagged off at city’s DDIT ground. The run will end at IPCO Hall after passing through Patel’s ancestral home,Kheda collector Shalini Agarwal said.

At Kevadia Colony in Narmada district,where the state government is building 182-metre tall Sardar Patel’s Statue of Unity on Narmada river facing the dam,the marathon will start from a private school in Kevadia Colony and end at the site of the statue near Sadhu Tekri.

The event,a state function,is being organised by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Rashtriya Ekta Trust,a special purpose vehicle formed under chairmanship of Modi to oversee the construction work of the Statue of Unity.
