Parmar says both his parents belong to Vankar community
Shailesh Parmar, the Congress MLA from Shaher Kotda, has been accused of forging documents to obtain a certificate of Scheduled Caste to contest Assembly and Lok Sabha elections
A complaint in this regard has been filed with the Karanj police station by former Congress member Ratna Vora.
In her complaint,Vora said that though Parmar belongs to the Other Backward Caste (OBC),he obtained an SC certificate from the Social Welfare Department to contest elections. Vora had contested the Lok Sabha elections in April 2009 as an independent, while Parmar was a Congress candidate.
She has also written to the state election commission and the state assembly speaker, urging them to declare Parmars election as null and void.
Parmar, meanwhile, refuted the allegation saying it was politically motivated. The Congress leader, who has contested five assembly elections from Shaher Kotda and won twice, said both his parents belong to the Vankar community of scheduled caste.
Even my father,Manharbhai Parmar, had contested elections from seats reserved for SCs, he said, adding,We have been living in Gujarat for several generations and everybody knows our background.
On Voras allegations that his fathers caste certificate had the surname mochi,Parmar said his father was employed in Calico Mills, where his surname was mentioned as Vankar-mochi,suggesting he was a vankar falling under SC and not mochi.
Parmar said it was his father who had approached a court to exclude mochis from scheduled caste. Had he been a mochi, what was the need to fight for the exclusion of mochis from SCs? he said.
