Looking at the unusually high margin of 8,182 votes,the BJP humbly accepted the defeat in the Mansa Assembly by-election,result for which was declared on Wednesday. The BJP has been winning on this seat since 1995,which had fallen vacant after the death of Speaker Mangaldas Patel.
While state BJP president R C Faldu accepted the peoples verdict in a traditional manner,sources expressed worry over the growing weakness of the party in the Gandhinagar district over the years by losing elections one after another except for that of Lok Sabha.
The Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation and Gandhinagar district panchayat are already ruled by the Congress.
State party vice-president I K Jadeja said that like after every election,the BJP would go in for a thorough analysis of the reasons either for victory or for defeat. The same would be done in this case,he said.
Party insiders,meanwhile,admitted the defeat cannot be brushed aside or taken lightly. They said this outcome may look inconsequential but the unusually high victory margin in itself was a little disturbing and unexpected.
The party with a thumping majority in the House may maintain a straight face but will have to admit that this result will give the Congress an unexpected moral boost as it has reclaimed voter support in the area after 17 long years, said a BJP functionary.
According to him,caste factor may have been at play because nearly 85 per cent of Thakore voters turned up in favour of the Congress.
